While independent bookstores have a rich history in America, they have faced significant challenges with the emergence of retail chains and online giants. This is what sets indie bookstores apart- they're independent ownership, distinguishing them from stores owned by retail chains or larger corporations. Many of these establishments serve as vital community hubs and have been leading the charge against the surge of book banning legislation across the country.
